GCOS provides extra help to members through our Beginners Group. Our purpose is to expand basic orchid information for people with their first orchid through those with many plants.
As many of us have learned from the more experienced growers in the society, we hope to impart knowledge to our inexperienced orchid growers and learn from our shared experiences. We usually admit that much of our knowledge has come from our failures as seen in the number of former plants found in our compost heaps. We hope others can learn through our experiences. Society members grow plants successfully not just in greenhouses, but under lights, on windowsills and even in our gardens and once started with that first plant – usually a phalaenopsis or Moth Orchid. In addition to providing information about growing orchids, there are beginners field trips, group purchases, beginners show display and potting bees.
Beginners meetings occur monthly at 6:00 PM before the regular society meeting at 7:00 PM. This allows time for presentations and question and answer time.
See our resources pages from the American Orchid Society and local orchid societies and vendors. These societies have resources on their websites and the vendors are available to supply plants and growing recommendations.
